Pepper Tristeza (meaning sadness in Portuguese), caused by the Phytophthora spp. fungus, is the most serious disease to affect this crop in Mediterranean countries, while it also has a significant impact in some areas of the United States. It damages the roots and neck of the pepper plants, causing them to wither quickly. Younger plants (3-4 leaves) are more seriously affected than adult plants.
