Pepper acreage has shown a downward trend since 2007
Pepper production in Andalusia, the southern Spanish region where the great majority of Spanish peppers are grown, totalled 599,600 tonnes in the first eleven months of 2009, a decrease of 2.14 % compared with the same period of 2008, according to a report released by the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM) (See Fig.1).

USA: Fruit and vegetable consumption decreased in 2009
According to a survey released by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, fruit and vegetable consumption in the USA dropped in 2009. The decrease was more pronounced during the first half of the year, while the second half revealed an improvement in healthy eating habits. The Index observes that the downward trend may be due to the global recession and higher unemployment.

Fresh-cut product sales increased by 6.4% in 2009
The volume of fresh-cut products sold in Spain totalled 5,363 tonnes in January 2010, an increase of 3.3% compared with the same month last year, according to figures announced by AFHORLA, the Spanish Fresh-Cut Association which forms part of FEPEX (Spanish Federation of Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters).

Pepper grafting in Morocco: get ahead of the game
The grafting of market garden plants is not a new technique in Morocco, but it has taken on particular importance for peppers. Using grafting in addition to other production methods makes it possible to maintain the yields of glass-house-grown peppers.
Groups specialised in the export of peppers started grafting five years ago. Two million plants are now grafted, mainly on two types of pepper: Dulce Italiano and Fusetto.

The Sunergy Greenhouse is one of three demonstration greenhouses on the site of Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture in Bleiswijk.
