50,000 trade visitors from 125 countries attended Fruit Logistica 2009

Current situation of retail was one of the issues that were discussed during the event

 

Fruit Logistica, the leading global trade event for the fresh produce trade held in Berlin, attracted 50,000 trade visitors from 125 different countries in its 48th edition of this year.

The event “continues to gain importance in the international produce trade”, the exhibition executive Dr. Chris Göke said. And the increase of exhibitors, of represented countries and exhibition space for this year’s event show it.

A total of 2,288 exhibitors, 178 more than last year’s edition, attended the fair. They were representing 80 countries, 12 more than in 2008, in a exhibition space of 88,000m2, 7,000m2 more than in 2008.

Around 89% of these exhibitors came from outside Germany, most of them being from EU countries (68%), especially from Spain, France, Italy, The Netherlands and Great Britain/Northern Ireland. Others (25%) came from other parts of the world.


Conferences

The event of this year presented several conferences with leader professionals in the sector. The current situation of retail was one of the issues that were discussed in the conferences.

· Thus, Mr. Roeb, professor at the University of Bonn, explained the control of discounters in Germany.

· Mr. Szaleniec, polish retail analyst and author of several reports about retail in Poland and Central Europe, spoke about the main characteristics of the current polish retail market.

· And Mr. Bosshart, CEO of the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute for economy and society (GDI), explained his vision, in the Fresh Produce Forum, about discounts and how they are affecting the F&V market.

Freshconex

Together with Fruit Logistica, this year was held the second edition of Freshconex, the trade fair for the rapidly growing fresh-cut convenience sector.

73 exhibitors from 13 different countries attended the event and presented its products and services. 80% of them were from out of Germany, mainly from Italy, the Netherlands and France. The increase of the space for the event of this year (4000m2), that almost doubled the space destined to it last year (2400m2), show the increase of the importance of the fresh-cut sector.


Several conferences by leaders in the fresh-cut sector were held in Freshconex

One of them was dedicated to the seeds companies and how these are developing new products specifically for the fresh-cut sector.

· Ton van de Goor, Product Business Manager at Syngenta Seeds (EAME), explained the work of Syngenta in that area.
