100 growers participate out of 800 applicants

The 3rd Syngenta Hot pepper contest was held at the JangHoWon Breeding Station on 7th November 2008. The past contests were limited just for one brand of hot pepper (DYCC). But this contest was expanded for Phytophthora-resistant hot pepper.

Among the 800 applicants who submitted their dried Hot pepper and the reports which were written about there own method of Hot pepper cultivation, about 100 chosen growers were invited to this contest. And also, the press corps of major horticultural newspaper were invited.

For the 2nd round evaluation, the three Country Leadership Team members (Sang-ki Suh, Hee-an Kwon, Sang-Hwan Kim) and one Hot pepper breeder (Yeoung-kwen Jee) were appointed to the internal examiners and the three researchers from NIHHS(National institution of horticultural & herbal science) and hot pepper experiment station were participated in the evaluation as an external examiners.
They evaluated the submitted hot peppers on the qualities (color, size, shape etc.) for one and half hours

As a part of the Syngenta EOS project (Excellence, Optimization, Simplification), Syngenta Crop protection (Yeong-Su Seo/PM., Sang-woo Joo/FMT) had prepared the booth for the promotion of the products in the Product Development station, which was extremely popular to the invited growers.

In the middle of the Contest, Hyo-Geun Park who is honorary professor of Seoul National University, gave special lecture entitled ‘The present breeding conditions and prospects for Hot-pepper industry in Korea’. Also, the Head of Marketing (Sang-Ki Suh) and Hot-pepper PM (In-Sik Hong) addressed the audience on ’09 Syngenta new varieties and the distinguished hot pepper varieties.
It was a good time for us to promote our varieties and for growers to learn more about hot-pepper farming skill.

The best grower with President of Syngenta Seeds

The winner was from Kyung-buk province and Gold prize from Jeon-buk province, and more than 50 prizes were given to growers (the silver, bronze, popular and the best report etc.), which was a kind of festival.

Ki-Chual Lee, President of the company said, through this contest for 3 years, Syngenta Hot pepper varieties were verified to be the best in the field. We will do our best for growers’ high income through providing good varieties with their technical services.

This event will be a help to secure key-growers and to promote our varieties for coming the sales season.
